Mayo Clinic Center for Advanced Imaging Research

​With a desire to grow its medical research facilities, the Mayo Clinic turned to Opus to serve as construction manager on their new build-to-suit facility.

Medical Research Facility with Room to Grow

Located in Rochester, Minn., the Mayo Clinic Center for Advanced Imaging Research is a two-story medical office building. Initially built to 40,000 square feet, the Center was designed to expand up to approximately 300,000 square feet. The state-of-the-art facility is one of the largest imaging research facilities in the U.S.

The facility houses multiple research laboratories that are located close to each other. This close proximity helps create a collaborative culture, advancing the science of imaging. In this facility, researchers are continuing to develop the cutting-edge patient care techniques Mayo Clinic is known for.

The building includes a 1.5 Tesla whole-body MRI scanner, a 3.0 Tesla whole-body MRI scanner and a 7.4 Tesla small animal MRI Scanner. In addition, space is allocated for a new dual energy CT scanner, a fluoroscopy suite and a small operating room. Initial occupancy was around 50 staff members with flexibility up to 70.

The facility is designed to account for the demands of specialized imaging equipment, including vibration control, structural concerns, audible noise, radiofrequency shielding and radiation shielding.

Integrating a Campus

A pedestrian tunnel connects the Center to the Mayo Clinic complex and the building is served by Mayo’s central utility plant.
