Opus absolutely took to heart what many would have considered an extremely difficult deadline. In the four and half months they were on the project, they renovated the building and added new space. They met our tight timeline, allowing us to fulfill the request of our major donor to host an important event in the new space.

The whole persona of the Opus team was about hearing and acting on an issue. Not dismissing it, but going out and figuring out a solution. Whoever it was who needed to be at the table for any particular issue, whether it was architects or engineers, the onsite supervisor, anything that came up, someone at Opus was coordinating a speedy and cost-effective solution. They were able to do this while being very savvy and collaborative in terms of respecting the prior heritage of the building and the construction processes of the building.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s was extremely active in the design process as the building evolved. One subject of much discussion was reconfiguring the foyer to the outside of the building. Opus was right there with us, helping to create a design that integrated it with the roofline and enhanced the front of the building and the user’s experience as they entered the space by creating a more spacious lobby inside and keeping out the cold winter air.

Although we worked with a different architect on the project, there was never anything less than a complete team interaction with everyone involved. Opus worked very collaboratively and effectively and there was a continual flow of good, constructive solutions. That was a theme that permeated the entire project.

We’re a bit sensitive to having construction folks on our campus because we’re a boarding school and we have kids all over. But I would have Opus’ crew back on our campus anytime. Everyone was great to be around and wonderful about the fact that they knew they were driving through a campus with a lot of teenagers who are not always paying attention to what’s going on around them.

Late in the process, I was chatting with our project manager and asked if he had any other projects going on at the time and in fact he did. He had a major project going on in the Twin Cities for a company that is many times larger than we are, yet I never got the impression that we were not his primary customer at the moment that we needed him.

Story

Bringing New Form and Function to Historic Campus Space

Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, an Episcopal day and boarding school in Faribault, Minn., is rich with history, and its campus is no exception. To help Shattuck-St. Mary’s achieve their vision and embrace its history, Opus Design Build renovated and expanded the Phelps Infirmary, the campus’ oldest building, into The Inn at Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

The project breathed new life into the 147-year-old building, transforming it into a multipurpose facility for the school and community. The Inn creates an Episcopal retreat center and provides accommodations for campus visitors.

Opus remodeled the existing structure and added 10,200 square feet of new space to the two-story building, which includes:

a large meeting room with adjustable partitions,
a catering kitchen,
a bar and lounge area that can be used for meetings and events and
12 guest suites.

Opus tapped into its institutional construction and design-build expertise to seamlessly merge old and new, ensuring cohesion between The Inn and the rest of Shattuck-St. Mary’s campus.
