Maintaining its commitment to Building Community, the Opus Foundation recently wrapped up its biannual grant cycle, awarding $656,845 in Impact Fund grants to 18 charitable organizations located in Opus communities.
Impact Fund grants are strategic investments between $20,000 and $75,000 in the areas of early childhood education, youth development, workforce and employment, and community revitalization. Grant recipients included organizations such as Chicago’s Big Shoulders Fund, which will use the funds to support a comprehensive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) pilot in three schools and the Guest House of Milwaukee, Inc., which supports employment readiness and placement programs for homeless men.
During the first half of 2013, the Opus Foundation also awarded $150,269 in Opportunity Fund grants to 34 organizations. These grants are designed to provide a quick response to needs and opportunities in Opus communities. Grants primarily ranging from $1000 to $5000 were given to organizations such as Sacred Heart House in Denver, which helps homeless women achieve and maintain self-sufficiency, and Wichita (Kan.) Circles Network, which participates in a collaborative anti-poverty effort.
Being a part of the Opus Foundation’s Action Team in Iowa has allowed me to have a fun role in the grant process. Truly, one of the great things about the Opus Foundation grants is the employee participation in the process.
