Putting ‘Design’ (and much more) in Design-Build: Part 4

9/27/2013

Last but not least, the final design phase of a project is interiors. Our interior designers are responsible for creating functional, attractive spaces that respond to and coordinate with a building’s shell. The designs must adhere to code and regulatory requirements and encourage the principles of sustainability.

Similar to people and personalities, each project will have its own unique set of aesthetics and design elements. Let’s take a look at Marquette University’s College of Engineering. Sustainability and LEED certification were key factors for our team as we designed spaces and chose materials for the interior. We used LED lighting throughout the entire building, reclaimed barn wood for accent walls and enhanced the industrial feel by designing a patterned, stained concrete floor. A unique element of this building is that the structure is on display, giving students infinite opportunities to realize the cause and effect of engineering in real time.

In addition to listening to our client’s visions, our team often finds design inspiration from a project’s geographic location and name. For example, the Minneapolis luxury apartments, VÉLO®, are located in close proximity to the city’s bike paths and will provide and promote elements of an active lifestyle. The unique aspects of the interior will showcase the VÉLO name and take on an energetic vibe unlike any other residential project in the area.
