In the Spotlight: Iowa Army National Guard AFRC Complex

​Last week, the Iowa Army National Guard AFRC Complex won the Design-Build Institute of America Mid-America Region Honor award for an Institutional Project over $10 million. The Iowa Army National Guard chose us from over 40 other design builders because we offered the best value. This award-winning project is a testament to our unique, integrated design-build approach.

Located about one mile from the Cedar Rapids Airport, the complex consists of two separate buildings – the 113,000-square-foot Armed Forces Reserve Center (AFRC) and the 60,500-square-foot Field Maintenance Shop (FMS). Both buildings offer state-of-the art equipment and facilities to house military personnel.

The AFRC houses ten military units and serves as headquarters to 60 full-time personnel and up to 500 weekend Soldiers. Other features of the AFRC include: a large drill hall for troop formations and community send offs, offices and classrooms, storage areas, weapon simulation laboratory, vault storage and auxiliary training areas.

The primary function of the FMS is to repair and maintain various equipment and vehicle fleets. To accomplish this purpose, the FMS is armed with 12 top-of-the-line maintenance bays furnished with shop lubes and compressed air, water and vacuum systems. Perhaps most impressive, the FMS also houses an indoor firing range, which allows workers to test weapons after maintenance and repair.

Utilizing our deep experience, our team members provided their expertise in many areas, including structural engineering, interior design, architectural design, project management and more. These experts were mobilized from day one to present the best idea to the Iowa Army National Guard that met all of their needs and fulfilled their goals. Our LEED accredited professionals also consulted on the project, resulting in a LEED Gold certified facility.

Working with the Iowa Army National Guard on this project was an honor. This facility greatly benefits the state, and we could not be more proud to have helped play a role in its completion.
