As popular outdoor retailer Gander Mountain looked to expand its business in the South, the Saint Paul-based company looked to Opus’ vast retail construction experience to deliver a smaller store concept for its entrance into new markets. That was the start of a long-standing relationship between Opus and Gander Mountain.

Working in new markets was no problem for Opus, which is organized by discipline, not geography. Opus tapped into its integrated team of experts and mobilized operations to cities in Alabama, Georgia and Illinois to ensure all project components came together correctly. For some projects, team members even temporarily relocated to see the project through.

Despite being new to the areas, Opus impressed local residents and businesses with its skill and expertise. One subcontractor, Tuscaloosa, Ala.,-based Turner Plumbing, Inc., commended Opus on its work in the area in a letter.

Continuing to Deliver Closer to Home

After working together in the south, Gander Mountain tapped Opus’ expertise to work in more familiar markets – Minnesota, Illinois, Colorado and Ohio.

In Parker, Colo., Opus is constructing the retailer’s third store in Colorado on a previously undeveloped site. Gander Mountain, the architect and Opus coordinated closely with the city to deliver a design that matches the premium feel for retail developments in the city.

Additionally, Opus is building a store Youngstown, Ohio. Located at the site of Gander Mountain’s former retail store, the project will convert the previously multitenant space into a single occupant facility. The new construction will create a larger, more updated space for the retailer’s operations in the area, significantly increasing the merchandise capacity.

To date, Opus has worked to construct or renovate eleven retail stores for Gander Mountain, totaling more than 614,000 square feet across seven states, in:

• Albany, Valdosta, Augusta and Newnan, Ga.;
• Algonquin, Ill.;
• Opelika and Tuscaloosa, Ala.;
• Forest Lake, Minn.;
• Parker, Colo.,
• Youngstown, Ohio. and
• Lansing, Mich.

Delivering the Client's Vision

The stores include mercantile floor space, storage and office areas for store operations teams. The stores' prominent wood timber entrances with concrete wall panels are consistent with other Gander Mountain stores and offers inviting curb appeal to customers who embrace Gander Mountain’s “We Live Outdoors” way of life.
